March 2013

I like indices.  I like being able to find things.  There's an index overhaul in the near future where I'll be making sure the existing ones are up to date and hopefully making them easier to navigate (the original work index, in particular, is one that I've let get away from me to the point it's nearly two years out of date.)

The plan is to spend this year getting somewhat more caught up on things. Specifically:
On the first day of each month I'll post the index for two years ago if it hasn't been made yet.  On the 16th day I'll post the index for one year ago.
Movies, Games, and TV Shows
chris the cynic's Guide to making Bad Movies for the Sci-Fi Channel - I'm actually quite proud of this even if what it says has mostly been harvested from negative examples (i.e. "This.  This thing that just happened.  This is how not to make a movie.)  I'm also proud of the fact that Fred Clark found it worthy of sharing on Slacktivist.  So, if you're called on to make a formulaic sci-fi movie that will feature bad acting and bad effects, what do you do?  Read my guide.

General Twilight:
The Van Scene, if Alice used her power - Completely different and much shorter.

Snarky Twilight:
Non-food analogies - Edward uses a food analogy only because he couldn't think of another way to explain.  Bella can think of many other ways to explain.

Me Stuff:
Random Stuff - Mostly my problems.

I'm not well at the moment - I was sick and extremely low on sleep.  I think it was before sleep medication was added to deal with the fact that the anti-depressant that finally worked left me unable to sleep.  Also I talk some about the phenomena of hearing through non-ear bodyparts and introduce the verb "heard-felt" to the world.  (The sickness and insomnia described here probably contributed to the general form of "Random Stuff" as well)

Well ... fuck. - The May course in Greece would have been a good thing.  The constraints needed to raise the money were such that it was believable I could muster the motivation and accomplish it in time.  Then it was canceled.

Not getting a ride home and being out of oil - Just ordinary problems for me.  Though I will note that back then (was the new bridge that lengthens the path up yet?) I was a much quicker walker and I managed to attend the Classics Club.

Apparently a bus is seven times faster than a pedestrian; or I met Izzy! - I.  Met.  Izzy.  Some notes.

The world at large stuff:
I was asked to share this (What the corporate jet tax loophole could pay for if closed) - As far as I know it has not been closed.

Selma Botman and the good and bad of Wikipedia - Botman supporters attempt to change history via malicious Wikipedia edits; chris the cynic proves she has no fucking clue what the real problems with Wikipedia are or how deep they go.  Ah, naive optimism.

This looks like a situation that calls for civil obedience - I default to reading that as civil disobedience even though there is no "dis" there.  Anyway, I argue that a a good way to protest a proposed law intended to harm trans people if it were passed would be to make sure it was obeyed by everyone in the building of the legislature that passed it.  (I have no idea if it was passed, I hope not.)

My Biblical Argument for Marriage Equality (and against both homophobia and trans*-phobia in general) - It has not changed.  This is my biblical argument against any kind of discrimination based on sex, gender, sexuality, or any combination of the three.

It's the day before Buy a Lot of Cadbury Eggs Monday - Don't act like everyone shares your religion; trying to bring an ancient Greek perfect tense to English one day a year.

Blog stuff:
Up to 70% off Joss Whedon Stuff for the week - Unless you're looking for something for characters to buy online on sale in March 2013, this really isn't going to be of interest to you.  I include it only because I like completeness.  Also, remember back before Amazon dumped me?  That was a different time.

February 2014

I like indices.  I like being able to find things.  There's an index overhaul in the near future where I'll be making sure the existing ones are up to date and hopefully making them easier to navigate (the original work index, in particular, is one that I've let get away from me to the point it's nearly two years out of date.)

The plan is to spend this year getting somewhat more caught up on things. Specifically:
On the first day of each month I'll post the index for two years ago if it hasn't been made yet.  On the 16th day I'll post the index for one year ago.
Movies, Games, and TV Shows
Movies that can't live up to their names: Wolf of Wallstreet - What a movie with that name should have been.  More werewolf and more justice.

Adding hypothetical options to Long Live the Queen - Given world enough and time, what I'd add to a Long Live the Queen

Long Live the Queen: A silly tangent - As it says, silly.  The hypothetical options above are serious things.  This is utter silliness.  It is a story that comes from thinking of what to do with a navy when you're opponents are landlocked, cases of putting highly valued things out of range (when the Nazi's took the Louvre they found it empty, all of the art had been evacuated) and generally piling the silly up higher and higher until I reached the end.

When did "badass" come to equal "evil"? (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) - It may very well be Sisko's darkest moment, some people have banished it from their personal canon, and yet some people think it's what makes him laudable.  The term "badass" was used.

The obvious Frozen, Avatar (TV series), Rise of the Guardians crossover that 20,000 people have probably already suggested - Elsa is an ice-bender, which is a subset of waterbending.  Clearly what she needs is a mentor: I nominate Jack Frost.

By Special Request: Star Trek Open Thread - The request came as a result of the DS9 post above.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
The narrative power of a missing apostrophe: Devils Due - The possibilities are so much more interesting than, "Devil's Due."

Snarky Twilight:
Snarky Bella summarizes canon Twilight through chapter 15 - Exactly what it sounds like.

Me Stuff:
And I made another T-Shirt (that no one will buy): Rules for dating my child - In response to the "Rules for dating my daughter" T-shirt which was, basically, everything wrong with ideas of fatherhood.

The world at large stuff:
On the infamous Whedon Tweet of Whedonocity (trans*phobia and gender esentialism) - I discuss the tweet and why it was a problem.

Epistemological Synecdoche - Is it possible to know something without knowing all of it?  Can just one piece (if it's the right piece) be enough to understand the whole?  I argue: yes.

Quick and silly on what locusts should be called - The name "locust" is neither ominous nor silly enough.

Windows 8 - It's fucked up.  But a year later I'm used to it.

Blog stuff:
I may have to just give up - There was a time when the future of this blog looked to be in definite peril.  I suppose I should be happy that I'm not making posts like this at the moment, but a year later I still have things that make me worry it could all fall apart.
The day may come when Stealing Commas ends, but it is not this day - People donated and I was able to replace my computer, which allowed me to keep the blog going.

God I hate making posts about money. - I really do.  This was a thing when fucking stuff up because medication acquisition problem left me with problems.

Why I'm probably not going to be posting as much as any of us want - Even though I got the new computer, mood related things were keeping me from being as productive as I had hoped.  Even though computer and money problems continue to plague me, it's a lot better this February than it was when I wrote this post a year ago.

February 2013

I like indices.  I like being able to find things.  There's an index overhaul in the near future where I'll be making sure the existing ones are up to date and hopefully making them easier to navigate (the original work index, in particular, is one that I've let get away from me to the point it's nearly two years out of date.)

On the first day of each month I'll post the index for two years ago if it hasn't been made yet.  On the 16th day I'll post the index for one year ago.
Movies and Games
Higher dimensional Tic-Tac-Toe - Technically I was thinking of the games there being "video games" but where else am I going to put this.  I think I was in high school at the time when I worked out what's described here.  The idea, such as there was one, was to translate the game into higher dimensions such that the following was preserved:

  • if no one made a mistake the game would end in a draw
  • The longest line was three
It, uh, failed.  But I didn't notice that when I originally came up with this (extending at least to six dimensions, maybe more) in, I think, high school.

Something I don't like in movies and "Vanishing on 7th Street" - Helping people gets you killed, being so stupid you get other people killed gives you a free pass to make it to the end credits alive.  Why?

What I would have done with Vanishing on 7th Street. - Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
Stating the Obvious: You are on your zombie apocalypse team - It is your team, after all.

Rapture:
Where Antichrists Come From (Part 1) - I finally put this on the blog, it was written in late 2009.  If one plays Left Behind God straight, then the right and proper thing to do would be to oppose that Eldritch entity.  Thus the Antichrist would be a logical hero figure, thus this story.

Narnia:
Susan, Aslan, Peter, and the leaving of Narnia at the end of Prince Caspian - It's the ending that goes with this beginning, and in it Aslan is a lot better about things like consent.

Image Stuff
Why are there only blizzards when I have to walk between cities for an appointment? (Now with images.) - Straightforward question
What it looks like right now (image post) - While the blizzard was happening
The Blizzard, this morning, (Images) - The next morning
(Image post) Blizzard over, shoveling not so much. -The shoveling job

Me Stuff:
So, it's that time of year again. - While it lasted I always very much wanted to go on the yearly trip to Greece run by my (now-fired) teacher under the aegis of Harvard.  I never had a chance of raising the necessary money, but I always kindled the false hope because it felt good to have the impression there was a shadow of a possibility for however brief a time.

I swear I had something I wanted to post today. - Two years ago I was working through bureaucracy to get public aid, now I'm terrified of losing it.  How things change over time.  Also, Amazon dumped me since then.

Mental Illness can be downright disturbing - So it turns out that I was sitting next to a person in class who thought that the teacher was sending coded and, apparently, hostile messages to her.  Even with everything I know about mental illness and how it shouldn't be stigmatized, it was downright unnerving when she stood up (unintentionally I'm sure) revealed that she and reality weren't on the same wavelength.

The world at large stuff:
About the US Post Office - Why it looks broke even though, in reality, it brings in more money than it spends.

And then The rain - Once we had seasons, now not so much.

How I would do aid for necessities - The way I would do it.  Nothing more or less.

Blizzard Stuff:
Why are there only blizzards when I have to walk between cities for an appointment? (Now with images.) - Straightforward question
But I made it home alive - Blizzard navigated.
What it looks like right now (image post) - While the blizzard was happening
The Blizzard, this morning, (Images) - The next morning
(Image post) Blizzard over, shoveling not so much. -The shoveling job
And then The rain - Once we had seasons, now not so much.

Random stuff:
Interesting ways of making word salad (Post 2) - Honestly it's here for completeness, it's what comes after, for example A Book of Nonsense with words from Through the Looking Glass, which comes two months later in post 4.

Base 12 Math - Addition and Multiplication tables - What it sounds like.

Perl question - needed some help for the word salad.

Word Salad (Post 3) - Pride and Prejudice with the words from Moby Dick.  Chapter 1.  (Otherwise known as FIRE AND BEGINNING By Pequod Frenchman)

Blog stuff:
Same Content, More Places - An announcement that I now have works on Archive of Our Own.  Same stuff as here.  Well, less stuff than here since not everything here meets the criteria to be there.

Weird traffic from Taiwan - Just me asking if anyone had a theory on a weird giant spike in traffic that wasn't associated with anything (good or bad) that might explain it.

I do in fact still exist - There was an unanticipated gap in posting.

January 2014

I like indices.  I like being able to find things.  There's an index overhaul in the near future where I'll be making sure the existing ones are up to date and hopefully making them easier to navigate (the original work index, in particular, is one that I've let get away from me to the point it's nearly two years out of date.)

The plan is to spend this year getting somewhat more caught up on things. Specifically:
On the first day of each month I'll post the index for two years ago if it hasn't been made yet.  On the 16th day I'll post the index for one year ago.
Movies and Games
My series of Long Live the Queen posts continued.  Please note that while the following posts are my criticisms of the game, they are not a denunciation of the game.  The game was good.  It wasn't perfect, but nothing is.

  • Inconsistency (spoilers) - Repeatedly in the game it comes to pass that you face a problem, seriously consider certain options, and then later face more or less the same problem and don't so much as think about the possibility that those options (which you've already considered and possibly used) might exist.  The game suffers for it.
  • Lack of Flavor Convos - When the only conversations are because PLOT it tends to detract from the feeling that the characters, and indeed the world, exist independently of the plot and it tends to detract from the flavor of the game.  More in the article, of course.
  • An inability to do the obvious (spoilers) - It's annoying.
Resident Evil: Degeneration, some thoughts - General impressions after watching the movie, and a fair amount of musing on the choice not to be an action hero when the capability is there.

Under control vs. under control (Wreck it Ralph and Frozen spoilers) - I was wondering recently how long I'd been meaning to polish this up and make it into a Slacktiverse post.  Now I know.  Since a year ago this month.  It's about the difference between "Under control means make it never happen," and "Under control means controlling when and how it happens."

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
The Princess Story, Part 4 - Princess Lara has a meal with Prince Apo and Princess Melitta where she tries to find common ground with Apo since they're betrothed.

Twilight
Making sense of Alice's Power - Analysis, not a story.

Snarky Twilight:
Going to the Vampire Lair - Bella and Edward go to the Cullen compound.
It's so white in here why? - We start in the style of Douglas Adams, and move to a semi-plausible explanation.
Meetings and Greetings (Part 1) - Impossible people, impossible clothes, and bets that Edward doesn't like.

Lucy, meet Bella - Bella takes some time off to story hop and ask Lucy (of Narnia) if she really feels like she's doing what she wants instead of what her author thinks will best serve his purposes.

Edith and Ben
Meeting the Cullens - Ben meets Esmund and Jasmine for the first time, Caroline and Alex for the second.  Jasmine lightens the mood, Edith plays piano.

Skewed Slightly to the Left
Calling for help - Cameron needs to call in help to get Tsion across the border.
Getting to the other side - Cameron and Tsion cross the border with a little help from their friends and high explosives.

Image Stuff
Vermont (image post) - It was an adventure.  The tire exploded, there were rainbows, the house may not have been bigger on the inside but it sure as hell felt that way.  So: pretty pictures.

Kaleidoscope music box thing (image post, also questions) - There was this thing composed of pure awesome on ebay (there are pictures) and I wanted to know if anyone had information on who made it, or the proper name for it, or anything about it.  No one did.

The weather, it is here - Trees in fresh fallen snow look pretty cool.

Me Stuff:
Now I am indeed begging for money  - So apparently all is as it ever was.

Desperately seeking money - Things really haven't changed much.  Though I do have less credit and more debt now.

Sunday Confessional - A twitter user discovered that Ana Mardoll was my sock puppet in spite of being older, having a bigger internet following, and living in a different state.  Then there was the whole hive mind, assimilation, and the Custard Initiative may, or may not, have been called off.

Have I mentioned that I hate needing to have money? - It really is sort of distressing to look at a year ago and realize that, in spite of all my hopes that if I just made it through that financial crunch I'd be ok, it, in fact, never ends.

New post up at the Slacktiverse: Who decides what the fundamentals are? - I wrote a post for the Slacktiverse.  I need to do that more often.  It's an important question when discussing fundamentalists.

The cost of an education - It's things like this that make me feel like I constantly talk about needing money and feel guilty every time I make another post on the subject.  However much I may need it (I do) look at the fucking list of posts about myself, two out of every three are about needing money.

Current Financial Situation - An update on where things stood.  A not entirely bad update.  In fact a point I mentioned repeatedly was that I finally had heat.  In January, in Maine, that's a life saver.

The world at large stuff:
Marriage Inequality: How will we explain to future generations? - A transcript from a conversation in a hypothetical future classroom discussing our marriage laws.

Blog stuff:
I'd like to do a quote (from the blog) of the day, please help - No one did, it went nowhere.  I still want to do that at some point.

We'll be returning to regularly scheduled programming - Because logically you can only beg for money exclusively for so long.

October 2012 - Another month index post

December 2013

I like indices.  I like being able to find things.  The Month Indexes are probably the most useless of the indices I make here, but it was never my intention to stop them.  They're almost, but not quite, two years out of date.  So this is my plan to catch up:
On the first day of each month I'll post the index for two years ago if it hasn't been made yet.  On the 16th day I'll post the index for one year ago.

This is the first index being posted on that plan, we'll see how long before I screw up the plan.

As a reminder, the point of these, in addition to just recapping past work, is to create a way to navigate quicker than going through the blog's old posts manually, but more informative than just looking at the post titles on the "Blog Archive" at the side of the page.

Movies and Games
Long Live the Queen - What I liked about the game.  This is important because I liked the game overall, I'm just not terribly good at talking about why I like things in any kind of detail.  Bad parts are easier to pinpoint.
Long Live The Queen: Unfortunate Implications (Spoilers) - Spoilers, note the spoilers notice.  This is entirely about the very end of the game.  Anyway, civil rights or peace and prosperity.  You can't have both.  Apparently.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
American Tricksters - Story Idea - It's kind of hard to explain quickly, that's why the post exists.  Short version: American culture is dominated by Christianity and Christianity has no trickster gods.  Trickster gods themselves stuck to the people who actually believe in them so most of America was left with a dearth of trickster gods.  To fix this the associated trickster gods of the planet have chosen humans to elevate to minor godhood to be tricksters for the non-(trickster)-believers.

And the candidates all live in the same house.  Some scenes with token white guy are included.  Loki is his mentor, which is, I think, what got the whole idea started.

Snarky Twilight:
Snarky Twilight: The Start of Chapter 15 (Or, that time Edward stepped into a bear trap) - Snarky Bella would not let Edward stay the night and she takes precautions when she knows superhuman home invaders might be coming to her room.
Snarky Twilight: Creativity, Trust, and ... um... stuff - Edward does his traditional insultingness, impugns Bella's creativity, claims Charlie sabotaged her truck, and is left wondering how Bella keeps convincing people to defy the narrative.

If the Heroes did their Jobs (Narnia):
The Dinner Party - Caspian and Lucy discuss the oddness of having a dinner party before dealing with the evil magician and the disturbing implications it might have.

Me Stuff:
Hope springs in a sort of lasting way that we're told is eternal but really who can say? - Donations saved me from total financial collapse.  Do you readers even realize how often you've saved me?  I don't think I can say often enough how grateful I am.

Insomnia - Just letting everyone know I had it.

Salvage - It's still in my garage.  You kind of have to read the post to understand.  It's a story--a true story--the kind of story that is only understood in the telling.  Later I saw another bike under the same bridge.  I wisely left it there.

I have no heating oil - Just another day in the exciting life of me.
A quick pointer when it comes to dealing with known liars - Extrapolating general life advice from dealing with the evil heating oil company.
And an update - The evil heating oil company dumps me in a (possibly fake) angry huff that leaves me with a profound sense of 'whut?'
Present conditions (pictures) - A look at the conditions at the time, so look at the quantity of snow and remember that this is when the evil heating oil company decided to refuse to deliver the oil for which they had already accepted payment, and hung up the phone on me.  Also an update on the object from "Salvage".
I have heat! - A more empty post you will not find.  It's just letting people know the heating oil debacle ended.

Shoveling (Image post) - Images to illustrate what winter is like here.  Text version: There was a storm and I had to shovel for seven days to deal with it.

The world at large stuff:
On poverty, internet, and cell phones - I don't really remember why I wrote this.  I know the screed it was in response to, but not why I felt the need to respond.  The point is simple, if made at length, if you don't know about what's going on with people in poverty, for the love of fuck don't try to use them as a tool to argue your points.

Music related to the time of year in a place dominated by Christians - Ten songs.  Christians and the Pagans will crawl into your head and refuse to leave, so one might wish to start with song two.  Some of the songs are heartwarming, some are hilarious, some are just nice.

Blog stuff:
Fundraising and whatnot - Same thing that I've thought about often, is there a way to make money off the blog that isn't just begging for money.  It's not that begging doesn't work (again, I have been saved from catastrophe by reader donations so many times) it's just that I'd rather have some other way.
More talk of fundraising - Oh good god, I didn't even remember that I was originally planning to graduate last semester before deciding that for mental health and assorted other reasons it would be good to stick around and retake certain classes I failed when in deep depression.  That's not the topic though.  The topic is that I was still trying to work out something I could do to make money off the blog beyond asking for donations.

January 2013

As a reminder, the point of these, in addition to just recapping past work, is to create a way to navigate quicker than going through the blog's old posts manually, but more informative than just looking at the post titles on the "Blog Archive" at the side of the page.

Movies and Games
Massive spoilers for the Hobbit and the new Star Trek movies, and probably anything else that comes into my head - The Goblin king was fun. Why did those swords not glow?  What do these people have against railings?  What's it like being a map maker when the mountains can get up and have a fight?  Who got the five rings?  Someone had to do it.  Was it Inigo?  Who?  What kind of a soulless bastard has floating cars and paved roads AT THE SAME TIME?  You don't get to lecture people about the prime directive while violating it in the most showy way possible.  Nu-Trek could probably work, mostly as it exists, if it were presented as Airplane (absurd comedy) but on a space ship.  Old-Kirk compared to Nu-Kirk.  AND MORE!

And another thing - I do not understand the orc and goblin economies.

Difficulty settings, Dark Forces, Deus Ex, TNM, and Mirrors Edge - Some musing on difficulty settings.

Fractured Mirror: idea for a hypothetical game based on Mirror's Edge - One of the nice things about writing about games rather than actually making them is that you don't have to worry about things like practicality or budget constraints.
Fractured Mirror: Post II - More thoughts on the hypothetical game.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
Very Beginning of a tentacly story - Three paragraphs, from years back.  The main character has a moment of introspection forced on by the thought of impending death.

Band Story - The band story, first mentioned here, is something that's been in my head in fragments for quite a while and I at one point took to calling something along the lines of, "Twilight if you replace 'abusive' with 'supportive' and 'vampires' with '(female) band members'."
Band Story Start -The beginning
Intentionally Lost in Translation - The exact same post as above, but translated by automated software into and out of Japanese 11 times.  You've just got to read it to understand the point, basically.  Doing so out loud might add to the humor.
Band Story, early middle I think - Main character is asked by members of the band what instrument she'd like to learn.
Band Story, very late middle - Insecurities, consent, and such.
A Job To Do - Once upon a time there was going to be a ghost story anthology, this story (one of the few that's actually complete) was written for it.  Follow our heroes as they don't let the fact that they died stop them from completing the mission.

The beginning of Something - When I was in high school I started writing a novel, I burned out after around 90,000 words.  The novel was simply called "Something'.
Some more of the beginning of Something - Because I thought the above excerpt might be a bit small.

Summary of beginning of story with evil monsters - When evil monsters invade the world one person assumes ze is going insane and, not liking the potential results of that, pretends not to notice them except when absolutely necessary.  This actually makes said person relatively safe for the time being because the monsters themselves don't think someone who ignores them is high on the threat list.

Christmas Truce inspired story idea - I want a story where an unofficial truce on the front lines can't be broken by those in charge and instead spreads until it engulfs the whole of every military involved and the war is forced to end.

Zombie Survival Guide: Translator's introduction - A survival guide for Zombies, by Zombies.  This is the introduction of the person who translated it into English.  The idea was to have So you've just been turned into a Zombie become part of a larger work in which zombie strategies were communicated to newly turned zombies.  Never got around to writing more than those two pieces though.

The space thing story maybe in medias res beginning maybe - I didn't even remember that I wrote this.  I'm not sure how I feel about it on rereading.  Any feedback is welcome.  Of course feedback is welcome on all posts always, so ... yeah.

Interesting ways of making word salad (Post 1) - Was supposed to be the beginning of an attempt to make, hopefully funny, gibberish by starting with Left Behind.

Greek Mythology:
A quick summing up of the Odyssey - "Quick" is relative here.  The thing is an epic, after all.

General Twilight/Vampire Stuff:
The height of weapons technology - *Movie trailer voice* In a world where vampire teeth are the most deadly thing around...

Random Bits of Twilight (circa yesterday) - Edward dazzling people, Edward as an angel?  Edward as a butterfly?!

Edith and Ben:
And so it begins - The very start of the story.

Snarky Twilight:
Bella and The Doctor have a short conversation on Weeping Angels - Why can't you kill a stone?

Anything that begins has to have a beginning - The Snarky Twilight version of the beginning of the book.

Skewed Slightly to the Left:
Why you will fly this plane - The Antichrist ought to be able to make threats that are actually scary.  So he does.

From my slow trek through .hack//Sign:
.hack//Sign: Boggled Minds - The Silver Knight and Subaru discuss Tsukasa and it is revealed that even the system administration, who should be akin to gods as far as the game goes, are at a complete loss when it comes to understanding the situation.

Depression stuff:
Don't minimize other people's problems. - Mostly just me venting.  But the title is generally good advice.

Check who the exhaust might hit before venting - I speak as someone who people vent at when I'm ill prepared to deal with it all the fucking time.

Me Stuff:
To any readers with ADHD - I asked how they coped.  Now they think I don't have ADHD, just some undetermined thing that shares certain symptoms.  Oh joy.

Regarding stamps - So I've got this silly and wasteful childhood dream, all I need for it is a metric fuckton of stamps.  What is it, it's not a secret, it's a surprise.  No, I am not a James Bond villain.

Back to school, but crunch time over (for now) - An update on my life, academically speaking, at the time.

In which I again prove I know nothing about programming - Some things that I wanted to do.  If I can figure out where I put them I have programs that do those things now.

On ASL - My experience of starting taking ASL

On hypocrisy - Person who was bullying me in ways typically reserved for middle school said that the only thing she didn't like about me was that I did this one thing.  The same thing she does constantly.

Apparently I won for most creative attempt to map the tripartite soul onto the Trinity. - I didn't even know there was a contest.

Caffeine, and scams I wish were real. - Some scams are inexplicable because the alleged business model would actually work just find AND not get you arrested.

The world at large stuff:
Not mean; but be. - Originally posted at the Slacktiverse (here), this is my thoughts on what to do when you, as an artist, find your intended meaning conflicting with the already existing parts of the work.

Is there software for parsing text into bare grammar? - I think I ended up using Senna.  It's been a while since I worked on any of the projects that require that, but not for lack of interest.  Point being, if you know of any such software that's good, please do tell.

Those tips for saving money - For example, the one that I see most often is, "Don't buy a latte every day," to which I respond, "If I were rich enough to buy a latte every day I wouldn't be in money trouble, now would I?"

Ok, so, Bureaucracy - The government is too small.  Anyone who has ever been forced to wait and wait at a government office knows this.  There just aren't enough customer facing employees to handle the load and hence the long wait times.  In this post I speculate that it might have another problem.  If your staff is already too small, maybe it's harder to get rid of the people who do shitty jobs.

On the utility of paperclips - People really underestimate them, in my opinion.

What are the best free books? - A lot of stuff is no longer bound by copyright.  What's the best?  Also, what's the worst?

Given that today is Martin Luther King, Jr Day - I recommend reading the Letter from Birmingham Jail.  This post has some of why I make that recommendation.

Ah... bureaucracy. - Ongoing tribulations.

We're all thinking it, I'm just going to come out and say it - Look at a picture of Hillary Clinton from this period in time.  Don't those glasses look a little familiar? *cough*TimeLord*cough*

My sister and I have differing ideas of the question of evil - The systems in which people find themselves can cause them to do horrible things without even consciously realizing it, but when people are suddenly face to face with the evil they have done, what determines their response?  I think they do.  Good people try to fix things, bad people try to do whatever is best for them.  My sister thinks it's more about how they're approached.  Are they put on the defensive or do they feel the person letting them know that they've done horrible things is being nice and understanding.  The post is a lot longer and more in depth.

Blog stuff:
August 2012 - Just like this, but for a different month.

I'm thinking of doing a sort of theme month maybe (Beginnings) - Was a thought for January.  (To do the starts of stories.)  Also contains a list of beginnings that had been posted on the blog at that time.

Ping - I tried to get readers to sound off.

September 2012 - Just like this, but for a different month.  I was probably trying to get caught up.

Blogger is messing up my footnotes - So if you should see borked footnotes, tell me.

[Insert post title here.] - A usual post if you remove all the content.

December 2012

As a reminder, the point of these, in addition to just recapping past work, is to create a way to navigate quicker than going through the blog's old posts manually, but more informative than just looking at the post titles on the "Blog Archive" at the side of the page.

Movies
The Living Daylights (Buy this movie) - Quite possibly the best bond film.  I tend to just call it, "The one with the cello."

Blink (Dr. Who episode) Did they do this? - Apparently not, but it would have been awesome.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
How Santa does it - Someone had to explain at some point.

So you've just been turned into a zombie - So you've just been turned into a zombie.  You're slower, your fine motor skills are lacking, you can neither speak nor sign, your walk is a sort of shamble, but that doesn't bother you, does it?  Because suddenly everything is so clear to you, finally, at last, you understand what this was all about all along.

After the Zombie Apocalypse: The lack of cold medicine - A much more traditional take on zombies than the above.  It's really the little things that matter.

After the Zombie Apocalypse: Memories of Oil Rigs, a helicopter, a tank, and battle tactics - Same universe as the above.

The wrong Sacrifice - When the deal is that you sacrifice one member of your village to the monster each year, and then you sacrifice a passing hiker instead, the monster might not like that.

Fantasy Reconstruction, how do you do it? - Genuine question.  Your average orc has presumably been indoctrinated since birth into evil ways of thinking and has no idea how to do anything than make weapons and war.  How do you, the victor, get them to adapt to a peaceful non-evil society?

Mermaid Story: A beginning - One of many things I need to get back to some time.  Teenage boy on a beach awaits the return of mermaids who promised, ten years ago, that if he showed up on this day they'd turn him into a mermaid.

What I want to happen in newsrooms - I don't care if you go with 'Trust but verify' or 'Trust no one' but the bottom line is we're not printing anything we haven't checked.

Greek Mythology:
The line of Tethys and Okeanos (Part 2) - Part 1 was in November.  This part deals with their offspring through their eldest sons.  It has the beginning of the Daphne and Leukippos story.
More on Daphne and Leukippos - The ongoing saga.

A couple conversations of Cassandra - When you can see the future, but no one will believe what you say based on that future sight, conversation can be ... difficult.

Rewriting Greek Myth Index - It needed an index sooner or later.

The Daphne and Leukippos story in one post - The first part was buried in genealogy, the second on its own, this is the whole story in one place.

The line of Theia and Hyperion Part 1 (Helios) - The stories are totally more fun, but the genealogies are a way to sort things.  So Minotaur, that time the sun nearly set fire to the earth, Odysseus getting marooned, and so forth.

Edith and Ben:
Step into Sunlight - Ben sees Edith in sunlight for the first time.

Snarky Twilight:
Who Knows? - Canonically Bella tries to make everyone think she's not with Edward, against his wishes, because if he kills her and people realize it was him he would then be mildly inconvenienced.  Snarky Bella has somewhat different priorities.

On The Road - Bella and Edward drive to a location Edward refuses to disclose.

Vampires Sparkle - Snarky Bella views the meadow and Edward in sunlight.

General Left Behind Stuff:
Mr Nicolae Carpathia ate with relish the inner organs of beasts... - Sort of an experiment, using Joyce's Ulysses as a base making a left behind story.

Skewed Slightly to the Left:
Apocrapha: Why Amanda was allowed to sit in on the meeting - Possible explanation for why Amanda was allowed to sit in on a supposedly secret meeting.

On and On it Goes - Loretta, Verna, Alice, Cameron, and Jane continue to try to do what they can in war torn Chicago.

The First Good News - What it sounds like.

Rayford has some time to think - And they are not happy thoughts.

From my slow trek through Deus Ex:
Deus Ex Index - The creation of the index page was meant as a promise that more Deus Ex posts would be coming, it's been more than a year and four months since then.  No new Deus Ex posts.  I am a failure.

Depression stuff:
Coping, and lack thereof - Having spent most of my life with it I got pretty good at coping with depression, when treatment started working I found I couldn't cope nearly so well with the things depression had been masking.

Curling up in a ball on the floor doesn't work with glasses - It doesn't.

New post up at the Slacktiverse - Matters only because I don't think I ever moved Coping with Depression, the post mentioned, onto this blog.

Did I mention that I've run out of hope? - Basically what it sounds like.  Not a long post.

Image Stuff:
They say never lift with your back... (snow) - Three pictures (before, during, and after) of the snow that I shoveled hurting my back in the process.

The end of an Era - The end of the era of people coming to my blog looking for information about the Mayan calendar.  Used it as an excuse to post pictures of sunrises, sunsets, and my dog and cat living together.

It's probably not actually Jesus' birthday - Images of a Christmas tree.

It's a white Christmas - I found my camera, took a picture of it snowing, better images of the tree.  The star burnt out, improvisation for the win.

Playing with a picture (of a tree) - If you don't know what I do with pictures by now, this is as good of an example as any.  Think of it as low tech digital impressionism by someone with no artistic ability.

Me Stuff:
The President stood me up again. - One of the various problems with the Obama administration has been communication.  Often time something doesn't get done for very good reasons, but the administration never tells anyone those reasons.  So, for example, this post.  "Hey, y'all.  I'm coming to see you." Few hours later, "Scratch that, forget I said it, no I'm not saying why."  Would have gone much better if the second statement had been, "There's been a tragedy that has forced me to cancel my plans."

School - Just where things stood.

If the world did end today - Freeverse poem.  Poetry connoisseurs may wish to steer clear lest their eyes bleed.

Anyone up for a movie? - One of those just there for completeness things.  I asked if anyone wanted to go see the Hobbit in IMAX.

The time has come to rant about Windows again - Until they make an "Install updates automatically EXCEPT FOR PARTS THAT REQUIRE RESTARTING," setting this time will come repeatedly.  Why is it too much to ask for to have a computer that says, "We've installed updates that won't be complete until you restart.  Would you like to restart now or at some later time of YOUR choosing?"

Good and Bad in everything (or, my life sucks, but it's sometimes good before it reaches that point) - Being a member of my family can really really suck, but there is often a tendency for things to be good before that.  They just won't let things end well and instead insist on dragging things out until something goes horribly catastropically wrong.

Plan for Blizzards - Description of an ordeal that could have been avoided if either of the involved parties had thought to ask, "But what if there's a blizzard?"

And my grandmother is dying - What it sounds like.
An Update: My grandmother died. - Spammers fucking love this post.  Thank you for dredging up bad memories spammers.

An update on school - Exactly what it sounds like.

The world at large stuff:
Would you kill Hitler? - Time travel brings up difficult questions.  Stop the Holocaust and you effectively kill off everyone alive today.  Which is the moral choice?

On the accuracy of the Mayan Calendar - People say it's very accurate.  It's not.  Instead the Maya had a very accurate understanding of its inaccuracy.

Bureaucrats - Most seem to be good, yet people always seem to assume that bureaucrat means someone like the person I described in this post who, in my experience, represents the exception.

"Long live the- wait. Why is it 'live'?" --- Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the subjunctive - Want to understand grammar?  Want to not sound stupid when you speak/write?  This post is for you.

The Other Side Wants To Know Too - I think that the "I don't want to believe, I want to know," people are missing an important part of fundamentalism's lure: the illusion of certainty.

Transformative art/commentary/stuff - Originally meant to be an open thread prompt at the Slacktiverse it ran a bit long and ended up being a short article.

The power of explanations - Two different handlings of the canceling of events due to a tragedy.  I think the one where you explain is infinitely better.

What to do when the world ends tomorrow/today - This may come as a surprise but once upon a time certain people thought that December 21st 2012 would be a big deal in a globally catastrophic kind of way.

Collective bargaining, staying competitive, and cross company solidarity - If you agree to take a shitty deal to help your failing company your contract will be used as an argument to make the contracts at other companies worse.  If you don't you'll take the blame when the bad management causes the company to fold.  (I said it was failing.)  It's lose lose.

"Social Networking" is not a noun - I know what you're going to say, but it wasn't being used as a gerund.

Did I ever say why it's best to take the switch after door number two is opened? - Monty Hall problem.

Blog stuff:
Becoming a millionaire through blogging - Comparing various methods of monetizing the blog.  It's out of date now given that Amazon has dumped me.  The only way I've ever made money is when people used the Donate button, but at this rate in two years and 20 days I'll get my first payment from the ads.

My Spam's Spam - Significant discussion of Cyrillic in the comments.

November 2012

Before things all went wrong I was planning on doing one of these every Saturday until I was reasonably caught up.  By that I don't mean to the current month, I think it's kind of silly to post something and then the next day have a month in review that includes it.  Maybe have things run the month afterward.

-

The point, in addition to just recapping past work, is to create a way to navigate quicker than going through the blog's old posts manually, but more informative than just looking at the post titles on the "Blog Archive" at the side of the page.

Movies
The Underworld series and the fall of the Lycans - In real world chronology they went from peace and reconciliation, to not having speaking roles, to slaves, to EVIL in capital letters possibly with blood dripping off it.  In the story's chronology they went from Spartacus to Reconciliation to Acceptable Cannon Fodder, to EVIL in capital letters possibly with blood dripping off it.  This is a post about that.

Something that interested me about Underworld that Rise of the Lycans erased - In Underworld the circumstances surrounding the Lycan slave rebellion are extremely complex and I found them quite interesting.  Rise of the Lycans retconned those circumstances into being extremely simple and nothing like the story I found quite interesting.  A post about that.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
And a child shall lead them (if Kids ran Congress) - It would work out better.  Not better in general, just better than the current situation.

Greek Mythology:
NaNoWriMo 2012, explanation and excerpt - It was going to be my own translation/reinterpretation of the whole mythos.  People have been rewriting the myths in question since before there was literal writing (so originally figuratively rewriting) always to fit their ideas about how stories should be and the mores of their time.  Why not me?

The excerpt covers everything from the beginning to the children borne of Nyx after the dismemberment of Ouranos.

At this point I started everything from the creation of the universe until family lines got too many to handle and followed one line as far as it could usefully take me producing the following:

The line of Nyx - From the beginning, through Pandora's Jar, to the golden apple incident.
Some more scenes from the line of Nyx - That time Nyx made Zeus back down, Eris and Hemera watching Aphroditie and Hera backstab outside Carthage.

The line of Pontos - Medusa, Pegasus, 50 sisters of which there are actually 51, stuff!
Expanding the story of the Nereids through the time honored tradition of making shit up - Because 50 sisters of whom there are actually 51 deserve a bit more characterization than just a list of names.

Invocation - To the muses, like you do.

The line of Tethys and Okeanos (Part 1) - Part two was the next month.

Skewed Slightly to the Left:
Stops along the way - You may be doing your own thing, but the least you can do is give rescue workers respect and the potential to coordinate their efforts with other rescue workers.

From my slow trek through .hack//Sign:
Information and Instinct - More like a half post than a whole post.  Mimiru and BT meet with Sora, more on how the Crimson Knight's reputation doesn't match the reality.

Depression stuff:
Time - Another of a long string of reasons to panic for family related reasons that suddenly came up WITH NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING, and ultimately (though I didn't know it at the time I wrote it) sank back down so it can do the same thing in the future.

Me Stuff:
It's a bracelet now. - Petty bullying can still take place a university.  Beating their swords into plowshares (or arrows into ... something?)  That sort of thing.

Ok, you know what? - I commanded people to cheer me up; included for completeness

The world at large stuff:
Rat@$#*%ing - 16 years after the death of it's most famous victim, the Nixonian political tactic is alive and well in said victim's home state.

Voting Day - Me encouraging people to vote provided it is legal.

We Won, for the most part - I sum up the results with respect to the House, Senate, my state (including but not limited to Marriage equality), and the Presidential campaign.

If you're going to leave the country, do some research first - There is an odd genre where people say that they'll leave the country to flee X.  The place they'll flee to is invariably a place that has X.

I've got a sort of research project for you. (And a poem, and four versions of a song) - I wanted to find the version of the I dreamed I saw Joe Hill where the singer talks about the first time he preformed the song which was because a fan had been waiting for 20 years for another American to come to Australia and sing that song after hearing Paul Robeson sing it at the half finished Sydney Opera House.  I found it myself though.  So go there for five video versions of the song, the text of the poem, Portal's Still Alive, and Portal's Still Alive interpreted into ASL.

How many things in the world are 18 minutes and 20 seconds long? - It was Thanksgiving, meaning Alice's Restaurant, and my favorite version is the one that talks about Nixon and Watergate.  So a youtube version of that.

Blog stuff:
The past, present, and future with respect to blogging - This was to explain a lack of output and to explain why there would be so much Greek Myth in the future.

Are you not liking Greek Mythology? - Simple question.

October 2012

So, um, I completely forgot about the monthly indexes I was doing, and forgot for more than a year.

The point, in addition to just recapping past work, is to create a way to navigate quicker than going through the blog's old posts manually, but more informative than just looking at the post titles on the "Blog Archive" at the side of the page.

General Stories/Ideas for Stories:
The odds don't matter (Story fragment in a semi-Calvinist Dystopia) - If the only way to save the one you love from Hell (and you from being dragged to Heaven rather than accompany loved one) is to make war on God... do the odds of success matter?

In which I pretend the dream I had last night might seriously interest someone as a time travel story/series of stories - So, medication.  First it made it difficult to sleep and I ended up achieving basically complete darkness to deal with that.  Then it made it impossible to sleep.  Something about the form of insomnia, combined with the complete darkness, made it so that while I never got completely to sleep I was able to dream, and things just got weird.

Tam ea communis et universa precatio est quam creare posse - Not a story.  The Universal Lord's Prayer... in Latin.

"Life's not fair," is no excuse - A child confronting an adult and a larger philosophical point.

The Lovecraft reference that needs to exist - Just once someone needs to realize that if something is quoting Lovecraft it is not, in fact, an ancient tome they need to be afraid of.

My Zombie Apocalypse Team:
What is love - Snarky Bella and I discuss the meaning of love.

Traveling back to right what shouldn't go wrong - this is the first of two pieces explaining how Talking Time Travel at the Gas Station fits into the rest of the story.  It comes before that fragment.
Why we can't go back - This is the second, and happens after Talking Time Travel at the Gas Station.

General Left Behind based stuff:
Her Bailiwick - The use of the word demanded that there be a Warehouse 13 crossover.  Extremely Short.

Skewed Slightly to the Left stuff:
After the bomb - Loretta and Verna work together to get word out, and prepare search and rescue teams, Cameron talks to his dad and learns that Chloe is outside.

(Possibly Apocryphal) Before the Potentate's Speech - Nicolae rubs it in, twists the knife, whatever metaphoric language you want.  Rayford could have saved millions and didn't.

Getting There - Cameron gets unexpected help in his search for Chloe.

Image Posts:
Image post: fallen leaves glazed in rain - What it sounds like.  I have a camera.

Depression stuff:
My life, objectively, sucks - Finally dealt with the depression, things still were pretty bad.

Me Stuff:
Something I want to do with gimp - I'd have to reproduce the whole post to be more specific, sorry.

I am, officially, out of energy and the follow up Update on yesterday are the kind of ephemeral stuff that is included for completeness only.

I want stamps - Still do.  the problem is that stamps are basically money, and so you can't exactly get giant quantities for free.

To the person who shouted out a car window at me while I was walking up the hill - This may be valuable to you if you're ever in a position where you, in a moving car, feel the need to communicate with a pedestrian.

Does this happen to you? - Anyone else truly deeply love someone (familial/friendship love I'm talking here) who happens to be a jerk?

Yesterday - Probably the definitive post on my evil aunt and the divided property and the drug dealing and all the rest, but if I reread it to make sure I'd just get depressed.

Something I saw - A VW bug completely covered in bumper stickers reading "Legalize Love".  I wish I'd been able to get my camera out in time.

There was just an earthquake - Doesn't happen much around here.

Another Random Thought: Intertextuality - Why I can't watch The Matrix without feeling like Morpheus is trying to sell me pistachios.

Finding Newspapers - I had a brilliant plan that involved spamming the editorial pages of newspapers across the country.  It never came to pass.  This was asking how to find newspapers.

The world at large stuff:
The 'verse is moving - Waiting more than a year to do this really does have some odd feelings attached.  When the Slacktiverse at Typepad was closing there was a rush to find a new home and Blogger was chosen because it was known by people willing to go ahead and set it up, but (as a blogger user I can assure you) moderation sort of sucks here.  So that proved temporary before we settled at wordpress.  This was announcing the initial move to blogger.

Being a religion, in itself, is not enough to make you tax exempt - It's true.  Also, it is my argument that, even though it's exactly what they want, when pastors willfully break the law by turning their organizations into the very political entities they swore they would never be when they applied for tax exempt status, the IRS should revoke said status.

Team Big Bird - Don't even bother, included for completeness only.  I missed one line of what was trademarked and that was the only line that mattered.

Mark Hamill is fun - He is, but the video that proved it isn't there anymore.  (Cries.)

What the hell are the rest of you thinking? (Directed only at those in the US) - Remember when a Romney Ryan presidency seemed possible?  Yeah...

A thought on Earthquakes, and Faults, and Jobs - My job creation plan.

Random thought for the day - I want them to release full length read through of scripts, as well as full length pre-effects shots, in addition to finished movies.

They Live (a movie you should see) - It could be a metaphor for capitalism, or objectivsim, or the patriarchy, or the ... anything that keeps people down.  But the point is, you should see it.  Also the origin of the phrase, "I'm all out of bubblegum."

Put The Candle Back! (A post about policy toward transgender students in a town I'd never heard of) - A schoolboard put in place a good policy to protect it's students.  Then revoked it soon after.

From my sister: "Do you hate gays? Well, if you do, join me this election day and vote Yes on One." (Yes on One is a vote for marriage equality) - My sister is a big believer in framing.  If people she agreed with just framed shit right they could get people she disagrees with to vote for policies she agrees with.  I ... disagree.

Want the Zompocalypse? Vote Romney. - Joss Whedon endorses Mitt Romney because only Romney is capable of driving this country so far into catastrophe as to cause the zombie apocalypse.

So, I just voted - If you want to learn something about Maine politics on a statewide level, this post may be for you.

An ad I saw: Vote Biblical Values (Tuesday, November 6) - Having already voted by this point, I had the ballot fresh in my mind and Biblical values weren't on it.  Except the whole love thy neighbor as thyself.  That was, and I did vote it.  Which is to say I voted for marriage equality.

The HMS Bounty - There were two, each made for a different film version of The Mutiny on the Bounty.  Now there's one less.  I made this post when the one near me sank.

Yard sign says "Don't Redefine Marriage" then radically redefines marriage - You can really tell this month was election season, can't you?

Blog stuff:
It's been a year - The blog turned a year old.

My spam is self loathing - It is.

Apparently none of you exist and none of this ever happened - The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Google committed one of the fuckups for which it is justly famous.  This time claiming that the blog had never been viewed.

Existential Crisis Averted - Google fixed the problem, in what for them was probably record time.

My first post at the Slacktiverse - Just a post directing people off site to read, "Long live the--" Wait, why is it "live"? -- Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the subjunctive.
