Whedon Stuff Post

For those interested in discussing such things in a place called something other than "Placeholder Post"

The topic so far has been phrases you wouldn't know were references to Firefly without appropriate context (which the universe rarely provides if you have not seen the show.)

  1. Sooo, today I have to drive on a solo road trip. Not a super long one, but one that's stressful on the leaving end and time sensitive and...stuff.

I believe I shall imagine that I am traveling IN SPAAAACE, and thus my fuel stops shall be fights for survival, and of course I must avoid the Alliance at all costs...

Not sure I can convince myself my minivan is a leaf on the wind, and really who wants that, given the inevitable consequences?

Also I'm pretty sure if Whedon had been writing my/our love story, one of us would be dead as of...sometime in August?

    1. my/our love story

(I should note that I've been away from the Ramblings for a week or so, thus missed the first announcement.)

Small part of me: Aha, Lonespark/Chris is canon! *told you so*

      Rest of me: Congratulations!

(I guess I should listen to my inner shipper more. It is rather underdeveloped compared to most fan-kids.)

I haven't watched Serenity yet, but "I am a leaf on the wind" is one of the quotes that the universe often does provide context for*, so...yeah, bad idea.

*Especially once you accept that you are going to end up heavily spoiled for Firefly no matter what, so you may as well embrace it.

    2. Also I'm pretty sure if Whedon had been writing my/our love story, one of us would be dead as of...sometime in August?

So now I know why you asked if I'd read your posts yet when I mentioned the ecard you showed me saying that if Whedon had been writing our story one of us would be dead by now.

  2. ...unless we are protected preexisting superheroes, that is...

  3. Another Firefly reference I know Chris has used here:

    "...damaging my calm."

  4. OMG, Brin, that is so the best of compliments/homages/whatever.

Also I have seen candy hearts that say "I Ship Us" and I thought there should also be "You and Me, OTP."

    1. "The writers said it would never work. But what do they know?"

I don't like to assume things, but may I offer open-ended congratulations?

    2. "may I offer open-ended congratulations?"

      Thank you.

  5. Yay Firefly quotes. The favorites around here are:

"Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" Which you probably don't have to know Firefly to find amusing but...

"A man walks down the street in that hat, people knows he's not afraid of anything."

"Also, I can kill you with my brain."

"I will take you in a manly fashion." I'm pretty sure I don't have that one right, but this is how we use it far more often around here than we probably should. Particularly if we can use it in reference to providing transport: "I will take you to the store in a manly fashion." etc.

    "My food is problematic."

It's probably fairly clear that the people I spend time with have watched Firefly way way way too many times.

    1. [Just rewatched all of Firefly, then Serenity, last weekend, unaware that there was a post about it here.]
"Were I unwed, I would take you in a manly fashion." ["Because I'm pretty?" "Because you're pretty."] I love that real-world usage you have for that.

  6. "Big Damn [Anything]" is pretty much traditional by now. A reference to the line, "big Damn Heroes" in Safe.

  7. Yey Firefly!

I thought that 'Shiny' had entered into general usage both on the internet and in the real world, but every time I use it to someone new at work they ask me about it, so I guess I'm wrong.

As I was watching it I kept thinking 'oh yeah, that's a great line' and now of course I've forgotten them all. People have already quoted most of the ones I can remember, probably those ones stick in my mind because they're oft used.

"I swear by my flowery purple bonnet, I will end you!"

Oh and also "Seemed like the thing to do." I love that one and use it often. [SPOILER ALERT] Used by Mal after hitting Atherton in 'Shindig' and also when he's brought back after dying in 'War Stories'.

    1. I use "shiny" a fair amount.

I thought it was "pretty floral bonnet"? But I haven't seen it in ages.

    2. Pretty floral bonnet, yes that's the one. :-)
