I've long imagined a post-zombie apocalypse setting where almost every exchange includes one side or the other saying what they're willing to pay followed by, "And a bar of gold."
It doesn't really make sense because no one would carry around something as heavy as gold for no reason and it basically amounts to a culture wide game of hot potato, but for some reason I liked the idea. Gold would be completely worthless, so people would make a joke of it.
And if someone asked, "How much do you have?" and the first thing you pulled out was a bar of gold, they'd know you were completely broke (or trying to trick them into thinking you were.)
