Kim Possible Episode by Episode Index -- The Redux

This is the new index for our restarted (well, soon to restart) trip through the cartoon Kim Possible.

(For the record, I know basically no html, so I have no idea if my attempt at a collapsible and expandable list will actually work.  If it doesn't, that's a lot of time scouring the internet wasted.)

From the previous attempt:
~ Before the Show ~

This will probably just be posts about the released pages of the pitch era continuity bible, but I like to leave options open, so if there's something else that fits in the pre-release timeframe, and I cover it, it'll go here.

From before:
This was the last episode I finished, and the size of the posts convinced me that a single episode has too much content for just two posts.
  • I find your suffering vexing -- Kim tries to conform to the role of "good girl" and "good daughter" not matter how much it requires her to lie about her own desires, Ron is triggered multiple times, Team Possible fails in what was set up as their main mission of the episode, and, oh yeah, Kim has an incredibly insulting anti-nerd/anti-geek/anti-gamer/anti-convention-goer/anti-cosplayer rant.  Good times.
  • Your irrational prejudice will be vindicated -- Kim is faced with enduring the living Hell that is spending time with her somewhat geeky cousin, Wade suggests using holographic technology to flake out on it, Ron is faced with that which he fears most, and the entire pacific coast of Asia is condensed into one squishy place where mystical martial arts come from.
⬤ Attack of the Killer Bebes: ?

From before:
This is where I stalled. The first installment of the "four posts per episode" format, which I really do believe would have worked well, and I stalled out after the first post. Have the first post:
  • Even though you're my best friend, I still think you're a freak -- Ron wants to join the pep squad, Kim thinks this is the end of her life, Kim's mom is more open minded, and Kim's dad actually has a life and history in a way her mother does not and never will.

The Matter of Aravis -- Index

The idea is that the reason for inconsistencies and non-sequiturs in the source text is that many different stories were combined (bashed together) into the existing The Horse and His Boy narrative because of sexism and racism.

Also because Archenland has a truly horrible history when it comes to their treatment of royal twins, and they'd rather pretend it only happened once, and any additional stories are just corruptions of the one, AND ONLY ONE, time the twin thing happened (which happens to be one of the rare times they're not to blame.)

In theory all of my HHB fic can be adapted into this, and I definitely plan to, for instance, include all three versions of "the comportment of a slave" by modifying them so they're conversations between different people at different points in history that represent the changing nature of slavery in Calormen.

At the moment, though, all I've really written post deciding to go through with the idea is the core story that mostly follows along with the book.

Things written about the conception of the idea well before I decided to actually run with it.

My shared super person universe - Index

It seemed like it was time for an index.

The Public History of Super Powers

Some version of superhero prevention squads exist in this universe, but things are made more complex and difficult than the post in question suggests as a result of wildly varying laws that range from, "All people are full people with all of the rights that implies," to "Those are things and they have no rights."  So whether a local squad is an official law enforcement organization or an underground railroad terminal that smuggles people out of harsh regimes depends on where that location happens to be.

Corv's team Des and Ge's team:
  • The Petrification Chronicles - Ge -- The story of Ge returning to flesh and blood life after being turned to stone for seven years
    • Prologue: Quake - Des observes an attempt to depetrify someone else (Quake) in hopes of learning how to depetrify Ge

Where Antichrists come from Index

Just noticed I didn't have one of these so:

The fiction fragment that started it all - After the Rapture, which Nick recognizes as such, people begin to listen to him about what has happened and what will happen.  Lucifer has an offer for him.

I'm taking the day off - Sometimes it gets to be too much

Demon Resources - Nick's staff isn't entirely composed of humans after all.

After the War - What does one do in the wake of World War III?

Life After Index, revised

Part of the page that lets you quickly skip to the thing you want:

About

Short version of what this story is:

Temporal meddling causes teleportation to go wrong which dumps Kim in the afterlife, lets the less savory portions of the afterlife escape to earth, and leaves the only people who know what went wrong (Kim's daughter, Shin, and Shin's nemesis, Jacob) trapped in a world entirely unlike the one they know thanks to a quarter century of supernatural temporal divergence.

That make sense?

Somewhat longer version:

In 2029 Shin and Jacob declare a truce when Jacob realizes his interim boss is trying to change 2004 which would would result in a timeline where Jacob (and Shin) were never born.  They fail to stop the past from being meddled with, but do manage to avoid being erased by the changes.  Now they have to survive in a world dominated by decay and death, and --if they can do that-- try to somehow set things right.

In 2004 while Ron Stoppable lays unconscious after a talent show bit gone wrong, Kim disappears from the face of the earth entirely, and a hole is punched through reality letting malevolent forces from the afterlife run rampant through the school.  With Team Possible sidelined others step up to try to defend those in the school and, hopefully eventually, the rest of the world.

Meanwhile Kim is unceremoniously dumped in the afterlife and left to avoid the unfriendly dead, try to find the friendly dead, and finally attempt to get back to earth.

The Story

The story so far:
  1. Allhalowtide (or The world changed on us)
    • Part I: Things Fall Apart
      1. Time Changes - In 2029 Shin and Jacob are present at a ritual that changes time.  In 2004 Tara and Josh step up to do whatever they can with Kim missing, Ron unconcisious, and ver bad things happening.  Kim has no idea where she is and just wants to get back to what she knows.
      2. Dying Light - In all three times and places, people have a firmer grasp on the situation, but are left struggling to survive.
      3. If we can make it through the night - Nightime itself seems intent on killing Jacob and Shin, with everyone else safely in the shelter Tara, Ron, and Bonnie have to find a way to save Josh, and Kim is on the run from the dead but running out of energy.
    • Part II: Another day older
    • Part III: Culmination
  2. Long November (or The new mother nature taking over)
  3. Come Together (or The advent of a tangential narrative)
  4. Empires Fall (or The old world washed away)
  5. New Beginning (or Foundation of the new world)
Scattered bits and pieces largely focusing on Mag, while she's unconscious, and her group - sort of an attempt to return to my roots by just writing the parts that resonate a the moment and skipping the stuff that doesn't.

Actual Dancing, not "Dancing" - This scene is very near the end to the point that the context needed to set it up counts as spoilers for the whole story. Jacob tries to clarify that he meant real dancing, not a euphemism for something else, when he said the word but when it turns out that Kim had no idea the euphamism even existed ... Jacob and Mag's explanation runs afoul of Kim's extreme ability to get embarrassed.

Metaposts

Asking for help with afterlifey things as a prelude to writing the story.

Metapost on the setting - I talk about decay, regrowth, cycles, and how that underlies the the metaphysics of the story.

Thing where I note that I didn't make the deadline - honestly it's probably for the best.  All of the installments were rushed, and the one that would have come next if I'd finished it in time was rushed, shortened, and butchered to a horrific degree.

The Sierpinski triangle and the structure of Life After - I was not nearly awake enough when I wrote this.  I doubt it makes much sense.  Life After is structured based on threes in a vaguely fractal way such that each "motion" in the story is an iteration less than the one before it; this post is about that.

Band Story Index

The first time the story was mentioned when I made a post about the fact that I had a bunch of, completely unwritten, stories in my head (to the point that a new one coming to me produces the thought, "Another one?") in which a transfemale lesbian character transitions and gains acceptance.

In that post, I described this story thus:
it's basically Twilight if you replace, "Vampires" with "female musicians," and "abusive" with "supportive"
So, you know, wish fulfillment fantasy (pastime, not genre) about a depressed girl meeting these people who seem above her, being accepted by them, and becoming one of them.  Girl happens to be a transgirl, hence "female musicians" instead of just "musicians".  Transitioning to living as an openly female person is part of the not-vampirification process.

So far I have written:

The Beginning - Main character, Jesse, meets the band while in a very vulnerable state (Content note: starts with transphobia and betrayal)

A scene from the early middle - Isa tries to convince Jesse to learn at least one instrument in her life.

A scene from the very late middle - Insecurities and whatnot eventually leading to a consent scene.

Fragment of the scene where the middle officially ends - Very little here, end of the final concert before Jesse and the band part ways (Jesse is returning to university while the band stays on tour.)

And that's it so far.

Mirror's Edge Index

I've talked about the game a fair amount, time for an index.

  • Mirror's Edge, and my playing of it - A spoiler free post in which I talk about the experience of playing Mirror's Edge and the good and bad points of it.  I should probably make a new post about this because some of the bad things seem a good deal less bad at this point in time.
  • Fractured Mirror: Post Two - More looking at how the plot could diverge, and some of how that could lead to a greater variety of gameplay.

Life After - Index

Writing this index is proving difficult.  The genesis of this story is simple enough: there was an October contest and I decided to participate.  Unfortunately for most of October I didn't have a primary computer and for many of the portions that did, I was sick in a way that prevented thinking type things.

The story itself is harder to explain.

Short version: temporal meddling causes teleportation to go wrong which dumps Kim in the afterlife, lets the less savory portions of the afterlife escape to earth, and leaves the only people who know what went wrong (Kim's daughter, Shin, and Shin's nemesis Jacob) trapped in a world entirely unlike the one they know thanks to a quarter century of supernatural temporal divergence.

That make sense?

Somewhat longer version:

* * *

In 2029 Shin and Jacob declare a truce when Jacob realizes his interim boss is trying to change 2004 which would mean Jacob (and Shin) would never even be born.  They fail to stop the past from being meddled with, but do manage to avoid being erased by the changes.  Now they have to survive in a world dominated by decay and death, and, if they can do that, try to somehow set things right.

In 2004 while Ron Stoppable lays unconscious after a talent show bit gone wrong, Kim disappears from the face of the earth entirely, and a hole is punched through reality letting malevolent forces of the afterlife run rampant through the school.  With Team Possible sidelined others step up to try to defend those in the school and, hopefully eventually, the rest of the world.

Meanwhile Kim is unceremoniously dumped in the afterlife and left to avoid the unfriendly dead, try to find the friendly dead, and finally get back to earth.

With October over I've started to revise what was written in October, so far I have:

Chapter 1: Times Change Time Changes: The event that sets everything in motion occurs and everyone has to try to adapt.

Chapter 2: Dying Light: With a slightly firmer grasp on the situation, things now become about survival.

Scattered bits and pieces largely focusing on Mag, while she's unconscious, and her group - sort of an attempt to return to my roots by just writing the parts that resonate a the moment and skipping the stuff that doesn't.

The original versions of everything follow.

Chapter 1: Times Change Time Changes: The event that sets everything in motion occurs and everyone has to try to adapt.
Chapter 2: Dying Light: With a slightly firmer grasp on the situation, things now become about survival.
Chapter 3: If We Can Make It Through The Night: Even as great strides are made, staying alive becomes more difficult after darkness falls.
I cram three chapters worth of stuff into one installment - in a desperate attempt to get things done before the deadline.  It failed, as evidenced by the fact that it wasn't followed by another installment.

Without worrying about the deadline anymore it will be a better story.  Whenever I get to it.  Chapters 1-3 need revision and expansion, the fourth installment needs salvage then do over.

Best guess is that it's going to look like this:
  • Chapters 1-3: The first night, that being Halloween 2029 and probably sometime in September 2004 (need to work out what the exact date on that should be.)
  • Chapters 4-6: The next two days.  The rest of Allhallowtide 2029, evacuation one day and a rescue mission the next 2004; Kim getting acclimated to her surroundings and finally finding help in the afterlife.
  • Chapters 7-9: With the return of Kim we're down to two viewpoints; in 2004 they try to make a difference, in 2029 they try to make it to the past
  • Chapters 10-12: All of the characters are together at this point trying to fix things as a single varied group
  • Chapter 13: The resolution

Bent, not Broken Index

Short version: Ten years after graduating from high school (which ended the canonical show) Kim has had everything taken away from her and is going after the people who did it but even she doesn't know if what she's doing is justice of vengeance.

Long version:

Bent, not Broken, is my attempt a genre of fiction I call "id-fic".  Id fic is about pulling out all the stops and just letting loose on the organ, it's action movie action where problems are solved by beating up the bad guys and blowing things up.  It's about appealing to that part of your psyche that just wants to punch antagonists and other human obstacles in the face.

That's a genre I'm not terribly good at writing in.  So how well it does on being id-fic is something we'll have to wait and see about.  Even if it fails as id-fic, though, I am liking it.  Especially the first chapter.  (At the time of this posting the other chapters are mostly back-fill.)

-

Why this is - An explanation for why I decided to make this fic, and why now.

Part 1 - A memory of a mission in high school causes Kim to seek out an old friend, but first she needs to actually get there.

Part 2 - Kim relates the mission which changed her from a world renowned heroine to someone on an extremely harsh probation.

Part 3 - Kim relates what the probation was like, and tells the story of how she violated it in the end.  Chi explains why he's not the person to go to for relationship advice.

Part 4 - Kim tells about the conditions at Shego's prison, skips over her own incarceration, and begins the story of what she's been doing in the six months since she got out.

Part 5 - Kim's journey takes her to a facility with defenses that are too good for her to bypass.

Forgotten Seeds Index

Forgotten Seeds tells the story of Kim Possible, Shego, and a few others after they wake up to find themselves in an abandoned and failing cryogenic prison on the moon.  It was inspired, with the author's permission, by the fanfic, "Fallen Heroes" though it starts later in the story.  If I have world enough and time this would probably be the middle piece of a five story arc. *

Chapters:
  • Awakening - Ten survivors wake up to find themselves the only ones left alive in a, disturbingly full, cryogenic prison on the moon.  They quickly discover that the abandoned prison is failing, and more time has passed than they would have thought possible.
  • Stepping Out - The survivors work to escape the prison, gather supplies, and find out more about what their situation truly is.
  • Moon Walk - The trek across the Lunar surface in now-ancient space suits is interrupted by disturbing revelations.
  • Air and Exposition - Kim and the others are reunited, Horatio finally explains his claim.
  • Downtime and What Came Before - While Kim and Shego work on the plan to get them all home, the other survivors get glimpses into what happened on earth.
  • Getting Packed - With a plan for getting to earth formulated all that remains is to loot appropriate whatever might be useful on the moon.  Oh, and apparently an alien war machine got left behind.
  • Between the moon and New York City - The survivors finally attempt the trip back to earth. "Fly by wire system with five hundred year old computers," Shego said. "What could go wrong?"

* Tentatively named "Before the Fall", "Sliding Down the Slope to Oblivion", "Forgotten Seeds", "No Second Chances?", and "Starting Over".

This index is part of a navigation overhaul that I've been working on behind the scenes since forever ago.  The plan is to do the whole overhaul at once, but it was getting annoying not being able to have a link to Forgotten Seeds so I pushed this one out early.

Kim Possible: Episode by Episode - Index

The original idea was to take the show Kim Possible and look at it one episode per post but starting with the second episode I slowed down to half an episode per post.  (The movies were designed to be split into three episodes each so that's how I'll approach them.)  That works out to looking at Kim Possible about a eleven minutes at a time.

It isn't exactly a close reading, because a lot can happen in those eleven minutes, but it's a lot slower than just trying to sum up an entire series in one go (e.g."True love defeats Issac Newton's fate machine," bonus points to the first person to name the series.)

The point of this is twofold, one is just to do it because people expressed an interest.  The other is to do it because I actually have a lot of ideas for Kim Possible fic, right now I'm already doing four*, and it's probably the case that many readers here don't know that much about the show.  This will, hopefully, serve as a way to get to know the show better if you so desire.

One of the things that has to be said at the outset is that I tend describe things with a very critical eye, so remember that for every flaw I point out, I'm still talking about something I like.

I'll be taking things in a slightly modified production order.  When those modifications come up, I'll explain why they're there.

[Kim Possible Index]

-

* In order of creation:
  • Being more than Simulacrum - Less than a year After The Series (ATS), Shego creates a clone of Kim and won't say why, but neither will she lie to the clone.  In accordance with fictional cloning regulation 23a, the clone has all of Kim's memories.  The story follows the clone as she tries to create a life of her own.
  • Forgotten Seeds - 500 years ATS a handful of people (including four characters from the show) wake up in a lunar cryo prison to find that the other prisoners are all dead and there's no evidence that humanity, outside of themselves, still exists.
  • Bent, not Broken - Ten years ATS Kim has lost everything and is out for something.  She isn't really sure if that something is justice or vengeance.
  • Life After - In 2029 a villain changes 2004 causing a crossing between life and the afterlife.  In 2004 Kim has disappeared forcing her friends to step up in the face of a cataclysm.  In 2029 Shin, Kim's daughter, and her nemesis work together to survive in a hostile world where they were never born.

Being more than a Simulacrum Index

This is a Kim Possible fan fiction inspired by another Kim Possible fan fiction.  In Blackbird's story "All I Really Want" Shego has Drakken create a clone of Kim (which, in accordance with fictional cloning regulation 23a, has Kim's memories) and then lets the clone go on believing she's the real Kim.  This, naturally, leads to unpleasant awkwardness and revelations down the road.

This story has Shego be honest with the Kim-clone, though not entirely forthcoming.  (I.e. she won't lie, but she refuses to answer certain questions.)  The backstory in general, and Shego's in particular, is based (with permission) on the version in Blackbird's story.

-

Welcome to the World - Kim's clone wakes up in Drakken's infirmary where Shego tells her that she is a clone, and is free to go, but Shego would rather she stayed.

Fall From Grace - Shego tells the clone, who is given the temporary name "Placeholder" or "Place" for short, how she turned from hero to villain.

Ruminations - Place considers the question of where the distinction between good and evil lies.

In the Morning - Waking up leads to a circle of immobilizing self doubt, and a story from Shego about why the military was willing to sell the plasma resistant material used to make the gym at a steep discount.

A Wizard Did It - Place gets a lack of answers on why she has Kim's memories.

Differentiation - Place grows comfortable with her place at the lair, explores ways to be different from Kim, and prepares to face the outside world.

Meet the Possibles - Place meets with Kim's parents and brothers, and finally settles on a permanent name.

Mind Games - Leela Place Possible meet's Kim's tech guru, Wade, for a brain scan and bumps into two more of Kim's friends in the process.

Before you go - Wade is left restless and introspective, Felix and Zita decide to go with "trust but verify", Leela Place gets the results of her brain scan, and she determines where she is going next.

I'm on my way - Place rides from Wade's house to her uncle Slim's ranch in Montana.

By my side - Place meeting with her uncle Slim and cousin Joss turns out to be mostly about meeting with her cousin Joss.

Part 12, as yet unnamed - Place and Joss journey to the Yamanouchi school in Japan, where Place gets some answers and Joss learns about the school.

Rescue Beautiful Monsters - Place and Joss log into Everlot to join Felix, Zita, Wade, and the twins on an epic quest.

From Ravening Princesses - The end of the the epic Everlot caper, as well as Place finally achieving (in the real world) the last of her goals of her time outside the lair.

Kim Possible Index

For some reason I've been kind of hesitant to make this.  I think it might be because work on Kim Possible is much closer to traditional fan fiction whereas a lot of the stuff I've done before (glaring at you Left Behind) is more along the lines of, "A version that doesn't suck," and thus somewhat distinct from traditional fan fiction, which I've never really thought of myself as doing before.

Regardless, I have two stories with three parts each now, so it's about time for an index:

Being more than a Simulacrum:
Part 1 - "Kim" wakes up in Drakken's infirmary to Shego telling her she's a clone
Part 2 - Shego tells the story of how she became a villain
Part 3 - Place, the newly christened clone, reflects on good, evil, and an outsider's perspective
Part 4 - Place faces her first morning, Shego helps.
Part 5 - Place fails to get information on why she has memories.
Part 6 - Place grows comfortable in her surroundings, and prepares to face the outside world
Part 7 - Place meets with her family and finally gets a name.
Part 8 - Leela Place Possible gets Wade to scan her brain, and meets some of Kim's friends
Part 9 - Wade, Zita, and Felix have more reactions; brainscan done, Place picks her new destination.

Forgotten Seeds:
Awakening - Ten people wake up in a cryo prison on the moon to find that they have been abandoned and 500 years have passed.
Stepping Out - The survivors work to leave failing prison.
Moon Walk - The survivors begin the journey across the lunar surface to the place that transport back to earth might be.
Air and Exposition - The survivors continue their trek, and then discuss the situation on earth.
Downtime and What Came Before - Most of the survivors have time to do whatever, while Kim and Shego work out the details of their return to earth

Bent, not Broken:
Part 1 - A memory of a mission in high school causes Kim to seek out an old friend, but first she needs to actually get there.
Part 2 - Kim relates the mission which changed her from a world renowned heroine to someone on an extremely harsh probation.
Part 3 - Kim relates what the probation was like, and tells the story of how she violated it in the end.  Chi explains why he's not the person to go to for relationship advice.

Here's How It Is:
[...]
Breaking up can be easy - It's not always a big deal.
[...]
Graduation 1.5 - Between the world being taken over and ditching it like a rat from a sinking ship to go after Kim, in this version Ron actually tries to do what can be done to help those staying on the planet.
Graduation 1.5 Larry Makes Contact - In the above Larry was sent out on a mission but I forgot to put in the result, this is it.

Non-Fiction:
Random thoughts when viewing the show again after touching only fan fiction for a while.

Kim Possible: Episode by Episode - Looking at the series one episode at a time and seeing what there is to talk about.

Narnia Index

Finally time for an index for this I think.  No telling if there will ever be more deconstructions and without them I might never write more of this stuff so... we'll see where things go.

Ongoing Story:
If the heroes did their job - A collection of fragments of a version of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in which the heroes are heroic.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Narnia's Food Supply - Marmalade?
The White Witch, Regent of Aslan - Propaganda
He's a Son of Adam. She's a Daughter or Lilith. They fight crime! - It started as an exploration of the simultaneous patrelinial and matrilinal nature of human titles in Narnia and then sort of went sideways.
Aslanites are on the move - We are to assume, or rather take on faith, that Aslan with the enchanting name and the beavers who exhibit straight up racism, are good.  What if they were evil and the White Witch were good?
Work Against The Emperor's Magic? - This is probably my most popular Narnia based work.  In the book when Susan asks if there's anything that can be done Aslan asks the question rhetorically with a tone that indicated, "NO!", in this story he seriously considers it.
The kicked out of magic land ending in general, and Narnia in particular - No story here, just thoughts and observations.

Prince Caspian
The Return to Narnia, and defending Edmund - The children have a more meaningful emotional reaction to realizing everyone they know has probably died of old age.
Susan, Aslan, Peter, and the leaving of Narnia at the end of Prince Caspian - A fairly direct sequel to the previous which, with it, bookends the ... book.  Horrible pun is not intended.  The previous one tells how they came, this tells how they left.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Not Die Alone - What the Dragon thought.
Where the crowns came from, and the books Eustace read - Where did the dragon get those crowns?  What were the non-right books that Eustace read?
The disappearing cast of Narnia - In a well written story everyone exists always even though the reader only sees them a fraction of that time.  In fact, forgetting that being "off screen" doesn't stop a character from thinking, feeling, planning, plotting, and acting even for a moment can screw up an otherwise superb story.  In certain other stories the characters... well...
Grab bag of other things from the Serpent Scene - Various things.
Eustace and the Serpent - What does it mean to be a dragon, exactly?
The Midas pool versions:
1 Let us never speak of this again - Everyone is out of character and nothing makes sense, let's just move on.
2 If I could turn back time - The mouse saves the day.
3 If the heroes did their jobs - The story that started it all.
16 things in response to Ana's latest deconstruction - Flat worlds, girding lions (not a typo), how provisions run low, breaking the fourth wall, the borg, plowing as a hobby, trying not to notice, the downsides of LARPing, and more.
Lucy, meet Bella. - Sometimes all you need to be yourself is a time traveling extra-textual character to point out that you do have a choice.

The Horse and His Boy
Edmund and Susan in The Horse and His Boy - Edmund and Susan can't bear to read the lines Lewis wrote for them.

The Last Battle
The scene from The Last Battle if Edmund Got His Wish, Version 1 - You may recall that Edmund wished he were in America with Susan instead of in Narnia.  This is about Edmund being a loyal friend and brother.

The Princess Story Index

It's a story.  About a princess.

Also possibly the only story I've been working on that's being produced in strictly chronological order.

Part 1 - Introduction to the princess (of the kingdom by the sea) and also the political situation that necessitates a royal marriage (the only legal alliance strong enough to overrule belligerent notabilities' desire for war.)

Part 2 - The foreign prince and his sister (of the agrarian kingdom) approach the kingdom by the sea and discuss the situation.

Part 3 - The three royalty meet, and we finally learn some names.  The foreign prince and princess see the ocean for the first time.

Part 4 -  The three royalty have a quiet dinner together, since Melitta had already ruined formality.

Part 5 - Lara and Melitta start a journey.

Part 6 - Prince Apobammos notices his sister, Princess Melitta, is missing.  Princess Melitta and Princess Lara are having fun over the ocean on Lara's flying carpet.

Deus Ex Index

At the time of writing this it's been several months since I had a Deus Ex post (That being Messy Beginnings) consider this a promise that there will be more to come.

Deus Ex is a game from the year 2000 that I very much recommend you buy.  (It's four bucks new.)  It takes as its setting a the future of a world where the conspiracy theorists were right, and somehow manages to make that into a very deep and complex story and setting.  It was also renowned for its game-play and has been called the best game of all time, by multiple sources I believe.

Anyway, I'm going through it slowly and writing about the experience.

Before Starting the Game

An Introduction of sorts - In which I talk about Deus Ex, its game-play, and go off on a tangent about an inexplicable "Teach the Controversy" style thing that seems to go on where some people say with no evidence to support them and plenty of evidence against them that there's a massive inconsistency about when the game takes place, and those who point out, "No there isn't, it takes place in 2052," are dismissed as star struck and believing that the developers could do no wrong (spoiler alert, they could.)
Backstory - I go over the games backstory in three ways.  First public knowledge world history, then secret history known to conspiracy groups and such, then the personal history that led the Main Character to be where he was.
On Newer Better Graphics and Original Text - Deus Ex is an old game, and even when it came out the graphics weren't exactly top of the line.  Yet for this project I'll be playing it without any enhancements because the idea is to look at Deus Ex itself not someone else's version of Deus Ex.  The post goes into a good deal more detail about that.

Training Mission

Part 1: No Exits - I talk about ways to justify examining the training mission, how the future looks, and a problem that plagued Deus Ex throughout.
Part 2: Infolinks, Lockpicks, and a lack of Female Characters - I talk about the way innovations in the setting serve the game-play and are designed around the two goals of keeping you actually playing the game (as opposed to rummaging through notes you've been taking on paper beside you) and making resource management a key element.  And then I get to gender representation.  Extremely short version: Yes, it passes the Bechdel Test, yes it has very unequal representation between the genders.  Yes the designers noticed the second thing and thought it a bad thing, but only after the fact was it noticed.
Part 3: Books and Coworkers - On meeting your first book I talk about one of the ways Deus Ex goes about creating the impression of a wider world, and you meet your first coworker.
Part 4: What The Hell Is Wrong With You People? - In order to teach you the gameplay mechanics of searching bodies, moving bodies, using hazmat suits, and using medical bots a volunteer is rendered unconscious and you're forced to swim through contaminated water.  I point out the absurdity of it all.  Also, a Soylent Green reference.
Part 5: What isn't - I talk about what ended up on the cutting room floor and how, based on dialog that remains in the game files, this section of training seems to have originally been much more ambitious and interesting.
Part 6: What Is - I talk about what is in the training mission, Gunther Hermann, what makes a tragic figure, and how stillness can improve one's accuracy with firearms.
Part 7: Killing People With Sheep - Meet the Light Attack Munition, also known as the LAM pronounced as in, "Marry had a little..." they can be used as thrown grenades or proximity mines, you meet a trooper who has thoughts on worker morale, I discover that (in this level at least) I Am Invincible, but my means of discovery reduces me to crawling through the level for my legs have been damaged to the point of being unable to hold me up.  (Can't be vinced doesn't mean can't be hurt.)
Part 8: Anna and Stealth - I talk about Anna Navarre and the stealth portion of training.
Part 9: Final Exam - There's a robot, there's a "river", the robot wants you dead, the river must be crossed.  I describe eight different crossings.  This is Deus Ex, there's always more than one way to solve a problem.  After Training forced you to do things this way or that, this part seems to be teaching you that, now that training is ending, you're not going to be forced into a single method again.
Part 10: Snippets of information - The hall of holograms provides you with background information.

Before the Game Proper

Main Menu and Character Creation - I didn't talk about the menu as much as originally planned, but I did talk a fair amount about character creation, the benefits of having a team of rivals, the downside to having the default real name be the same as the code name, and how skills work.  And that leads into the idea of resource management.
Intro - Bob Page and Walton Simons have a chat about manipulating governments and letting the bodies pile up in the streets, I provide commentary.

Theme Post: Messy Beginnings - I talk about the tendency in the game, and in the real world, for things not to have a single founding date but instead to evolve through stages and have multiple places in history where they can be said to originate.

Rewriting Greek Myth Index

It started as a NaNoWriMo projected called As yet untitled novel based on Greek and Roman creation myths with more poetic licence than should ever be given to anyone which failed by 21,897 when the month ended.

I was using Hesiod, especially the Theogony, as the framework around which to amalgamate the various conflicting myths.  The trouble was that the Theogony is not chronological, instead it tends to follow a family line to its end, back up to the next family line over, tell that to it's end, and so forth.  Like solving a maze by only making right turns, and then, when you hit a dead end, backing up to the most recent turn you didn't take left and taking a left there followed by only right turns after that.  Repeat.  It's a system, and a fairly simple to understand one, and as has been pointed out it had poetic value as well (it was able to resolve early in the rule of Zeus in such a way that it made it seem like the conflict had all ended because all of the conflict after that point had already been dealt with in earlier family lines.)

Every time I attempted to chart things out so I could make them chronological for my project I ended up losing interest, or getting a headache, or getting distracted, or all three. (Or any combination of two.)

So I started taking up the family line thing myself, making notes as to where the stories cross over because those can be used to develop a chronology.

This is what we've got so far:

NaNoWriMo 2012, explanation and excerpt - An explanation of what NaNoWriMo is, and the beginning when I was trying to be chronological

The line of Nyx - From the beginning to Eris throwing an apple into a party (which sets off the Trojan War.)

Some more scenes from the line of Nyx - How Nyx made Zeus back down, Eris and Hemera watching a scene for the Aeniad.

The Line of Pontos - Most of the monsters seem to come from this line, so Hercules kills a bunch of stuff.  Also, footnotes.

Expanding the story of the Nereids through the time honored tradition of making shit up - I did try looking for actual information on the 48 or so that don't have much beyond names, but I came up short, thus this post in which I fill in the blanks the traditional way.

Invocation - Generally these go at the front, and if the project is ever finished it will.

The line of Tethys and Okeanos (Part 1) - In which I tell how short it would be if I stuck to Hesiod alone, and then discuss the lines of the eldest daughters.

The line of Tethys and Okeanos (Part 2) - In which I discuss the lines of the eldest sons and, how did I put it?  Keep in mind that this is Greek myth so there are multiple varieties of rape, Aphrodite and her son which is sort of on the love potion end of the rape-like spectrum, sex with a bear, transformation into animals, transformation into plants, incest, Sirens, rivers having sex with each other, suicide attempts, kidnapping, murder, trauma, tears, crossdressing to get into women only spaces (no, not the story about the guy who gets his head ripped off) me calling on a muse to fill in a hole in that story and writing about someone who appears to be pretty well trans, the death of humanity by flood with only a couple of exceptions, bullshit etymology to try to paper over plot holes, death by serpent, serpent death, resurrection, disavowing a predestination "own grandpa" paradox, an abnormal dislike of hermaphrodites and a strange fixation on castration, rape by use of wine after rape by jumping out of the bushes got the rapist killed, death by tree cutting, me making up names because I could only get 17 of the 20, random asides about transliteration, being turned into a flute, Hercules, and stuff. And that's probably about it.  Yeah, that's how I put it.

More on Daphne and Leukippos - I continue the story I called on Kalliope to help me fill in the whole in it, and first explain the historical record around the story.

A couple conversations of Cassandra - Because, why not?

Daphne and Leukippos on one page - Nothing new, except for some corrections where there were errors of one sort or another in the original, instead it's just the story of the nymph who becomes a huntress, the crossdresser/transcharacter who falls in love with her, Apollo being an idiot, and what happened afterward, all on one page without being surrounded by other stories (as the first part had been) or being prefaced by notes about the extant works that describe, and fail to describe, the story (as the second part had been.)
