Post Rapture, No News Today

[Originally posted at Slacktivist.]

The cameras came on, Cameron Williams looked into the teleprompter, and couldn't make the words in it make sense.  His eyes were in focus, he could make out every letter, but he couldn't form the letters into words.

He blinked.  It didn't help.

It didn't matter.  Nothing mattered anymore.  He hung his head.  Then he put it in his hands.  More silence.

He didn't look up.  "It's been a week since the greatest disaster in the history of the world.  Billions are missing, the vast majority of them children.  And I have nothing new to tell you.

"Not a damned thing.  Just like yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that.  And the day before and the day before, and the day it happened.  We have nothing new to report because no one knows a fucking thing.  No one knows what happened.  No one knows if they're alive or dead.  No one knows if we can get them back.

"There is no news."

A pause.  Cameron William's head still in his hands.  That image being broadcast world wide.

"My producer is telling me to mention the crime wave.  It's small.  Very small.  More a statistical blip than a crime wave.  My personal theory is that everyone is still in shock.  Once that ends mere anarchy will be unleashed upon the world.

"Things fall apart.  The center cannot hold.  This is Cameron Williams signing off."

  2. Wow.

My only quibble: I don't think Bucky McNeverfile is smart enough to quote Yeats.
