The screws on your back (Poem)

You think
You understand
When you hear the story second hand.

When you learn
The three year old
Hit the floor.

When the pregnant mother
Tells you
Of her nightmares

When you see where
The taser hit
The father to be

When you hear
The door was broken down

When you learn
The cops were called
Based on nothing
But lies

When you learn that
Irene, and two of her sons,
Signed statements saying
They were there
They were spoken to
They were threatened
They were in danger
They were present for every moment
And felt every stimulus
When they never left the house.

When you learn
Even
The chief of police
Says the Moons
Were trespassing
Not the other way around.

And so,
Everyone knows that
The call was fraudulent
The statements were lies
There was no cause.

You think you understand
When you're told how the man
With the gun
Snuck onto the property
From the Moon's home,
And in the lighting
The frightened family
Thought he was a Moon with a gun
For he never announced
He was a cop.

You think you understand
When you learn the
Only thing
That stopped this man
From committing murder
Was when the mother
Stepped in front of him
And, in his moment of hesitation,
Barely finishing before he pulled
The trigger
Said, "You're not going to shoot
An unarmed pregnant woman,"
And staked her life
The life of her three year old
The life of the father of her child
to be
That might have died that day
before becoming
A child
On the hope that this man
Who was willing to shoot
An unarmed woman
Would stop at the mention
Of pregnancy.

You think you understand
When you learn
That he switched to his Taser.

You think you understand
When you learn that
After she said,
"You're not going to Tase
An unarmed pregnant woman,"
He hesitated again before
Going to the house,
Where her three year old
And the father of her child to be
Were inside
Threatening no one,
And broke down the door.

You think you understand when you learn
That this is when
The cop knocked the child to the ground
And used the Taser.

You think you understand
When you learn that even
If the allegations were true,
Which they weren't,
It was illegal for the cop
To break down the door.

You think you understand when
You look at the child
And wish you understood as little
As he did
About what happened.

You think you understand when you learn that
The Moons called
Not just the police in hopes of
Getting the family killed
But also child welfare
Tearing the family apart
For who would trust a woman in
A home with a broken door
And a man in jail,
waiting for sentencing
after the police saw fit to tase him,
to raise a child,
And animal welfare
in hopes of
shutting down the farm,
And code enforcement,
For there are rules about
Houses not having gaping holes
where a door once stood,
And every other
agency
they could think of.

You think you understand
When you see someone
Separated from her son
Start to crack when
Code enforcement
Has to cancel
Because
The person they
Had been sending
Needed to
See his sick
Child.

And you think you understand
Why she cracks
When she is reminded that
Healthy or sick
She cannot see
Her child.

You think you understand.
But then
You go
Into the house.

Yellow letters on a blue background
Tell you "Welcome",
in a cozy painted style,
from the floor.

You look closer at what
Once was door
And see the painting
Had once said,
"Welcome
As you are,"
On one side
And
On the other,
"Home
Is where the"
And a heart shape
In red.

There is no more.

The "is" is gone.
Perhaps it is still there
Just bent backward
Hidden
Under what once was door.

You can't open
The wreckage,
Nor can you
Close it.

So you step over the part
That holds the doorknob.

You notice
The lock that didn't
Protect.

You see a piece,
You know not what,
Thrown farther,
And you know
That the destruction
Goes further.

You slip
Through what once
Was doorway
You're careful
Not to step
On the wreckage.

Then you feel the screws
The screws that once
Held the door together.
The screws that were
Never meant to be seen
Or felt.

The screws on the
Part of the door
Still hanging broken
On the hinges.

The screws that scrape your back
As you attempt to enter
The house that has
No door.

It is when you feel
The screws on your back
That you realize
You will never understand.

How could you understand
When you haven't had to
Step in front of a loaded gun
To save your love
From a being killed
By a thug
With a badge
Who follows no law?

How could you understand
When you haven't
Gambled your life
And the lives of
Those you love
On the belief that a single
Word
Can stop a killing?

How can you understand
When you will never
Carry a child
Never feel a kick?

How can you understand when
No one has ever pointed
A loaded gun
at you?

How can you understand
When your door stands
Strong?

How can you understand
When you've never
Been charged with interfering
With administrative activities
Because you told someone
Not to shoot you?

How can you understand
When you aren't being
Called to court.

How can you understand
When you have never
Known the feeling
Of having electricity
Pumped through your
Body
To give someone a
Cheap
             thrill
Simply because he has
A badge
And you have nothing?

How can you understand
When you haven't
Suffered through
It?

And
You think
You will never
Understand.

Yeah.  It happened.  The Cape Elizabeth police are inconsistent at best.

On the one hand, this isn't the first time the neighbors have made fake calls.  The police have actually recommended that my sister and her family file a formal complaint against the neighbors because then, apparently, they wouldn't have to respond to every bullshit call the neighbors made.

On the other hand, the cop responding in this case had his gun drawn before he even made contact with anyone, was clearly ready to kill everyone (except perhaps the three year old, who he did send on a trip straight to the floor because . . . Jasper) basically went out of his way to look like an armed assailant rather than a police officer, and didn't even bother making up plausible bullshit as to why he broke various laws to do what he did.

I can't give too many more details.  The case is ongoing.  The Moons have money to burn.  I don't know about right now, but they could definitely afford houses on multiple continents not long ago, which gives you some idea of how far they outclass all non-evil members of my extended family in the income and/or wealth category.  Cape Elizabeth is changing, has been since I was a kid if not longer.  The farms are dying.  The affluent are taking over.

The Moons are in the second category.

So there are limits to what I can say without a lawyer coming after me, or the police getting called saying I'm threatening someone with a machete because I'm trimming the bushes.  (Farming implements may look scary, but wood is God damned hard.  Most people with axes are not ax murderers, for example, but instead wood cutters, though we were using it as a hammer today.)

There will come a time when I can say more, and when that time comes I intend to say it.  With pictures if at all possible.  (Didn't bring my camera today.)

A poem about Limbo (Four Realms)

[I envision this as being, in world, a poem written by an anonymous author generally agreed to be a female human child.]

The world is curved; your mind is flat
You try to think-- Oh God, what's that!?
Where we walk the demons tread
And even angels quake with dread
But they to not the demons fear
Something from Outside draws near
This place changes 'neath our feet
As we beat our brave retreat
In the shadow of our world
Are Limbo's secret truths unfurled.

New England Mentality (A Poem)

[Originally posted at Ana Mardolls Ramblings, after an exhchange about New England that I'll reproduce at the end.]

We do not want to know if you love your cat
We'd rather not hear that you are part bat
It's not our concern if you are slob
We don't care that you got a job
Don't come to us if you're unemployed
Share your good news and we'll be annoyed
If world domination is your wish
Or you have discovered that you are part fish
Or your mom is from Mars and your dad is from Pluto
And you like Popeye less than Bluto
We don't care of these things, nor do we
Judge, just hear our strong plea
That you leave us alone
And let us stay safe in our home
We wish to be free from your needs, wants, and loves
It's not that we think we're above you like doves
It's just that we're content to be us,
And don't mingle well with those on our bus.
We simply don't care a jot
About your bumper crop of shallot
If you are in love that's really quite great
Be you gay, bi, pan or even quite straight
But don't tell us, we don't care
And all these intrusions we can hardly bare
Unless you like the Yankees
You will not us displease
Provided you don't bother us
By wanting to discuss
                                      Anything.

Like I said, I suspect it's actually due to a blasphemous Cthulhu cult in your area. Have you checked your neighbours for gills and/or immobile, wax-like faces?
I wrote:
This is New England, we don't speak to our neighbors, we don't look at our neighbors, if our neighbors informed us that they were going to summon a dread god and destroy the world our response would be, "Ok, but did you really have to bother me about it?"
New England, one of the places where people claiming they don't want you to flaunt your sexuality do in fact mean, "I respect your right to have a monogamous culturally-approved heterosexual relationship, but don't tell me about it; I don't want to know," every bit as much as they mean the same for non heterosexual, non-monogamous, and otherwise non-culturally-approved relationships.
New England, land of, "We have front porches so big that they take up the entire length of our house but we never do anything on/with them because then someone might *hushed tone* talk to us."
New England ... ok, I'm taking this a bit far, but ever wonder why Lovecraft set his works in New England? Because we respect your right to be a fish person provided that you don't make a big deal about it and, no, we will NOT follow up on possible signs that you might be one because PRIVACY and we have our own shit to do, damn it.
I wrote:
Or, for a short version, the New England mentality is, "You can do whatever you want, just stay in the damned closet," applied to everyone and everything.
And then, in the same post, I wrote the above poem.

An accurate transcript of the greatest poem ever written.

It is a source of annoyance for me that the transcripts of the greatest poem ever written all seem to be wrong.

One example is that  "and hail" is often replaced by "inhale" the Toxic waste and Ayatollah line gets messed up in all sorts of bizarre ways largely because people can't figure out that the "or" was an "or".  (Some people don't even realize it was a conjunction.)  So on, so forth, the problems are there left and right.

So, hopefully, this is an accurate transcript:

The Greatest Poem Ever Written:

Are You Sure?
Copyright two thousand and ten by the Reverend Sir Doctor Stephen T. Colbert DFA

Did you hear that?  No?  You're probably going deaf.
It's your kids back home cooking up some crystal meth.
Did you turn off the oven? Did you set the alarm?
They still haven't caught the man with one arm.

Look around at these people. How safe do you feel?
Your car, when you parked, did you lock it?
Thinking reasonably now, what are the odds that nobody here's a pickpocket?
That guy who just coughed down your neck, could he have an infection?
The restaurant where you went to brunch, did it fail its health inspection?

A mad man could set loose a virus for which there isn't a cure.
And while these things may be unlikely, ask yourself: Are you sure?
And can you be sure that you won’t get Ebola from a tainted diet cola,
Toxic waste or getting chased by a bearded Ayatollah?

Funnel clouds and hail, anthrax in the mail.
Your lover will discover your vestigial tail.

Someone's robbing your house.
I can see through your blouse.
Your mother was right, you chose the wrong spouse.

Unlabeled Drano, tornadoes, torpedoes.
The horrible sight of some Guidos in Speedos.
STDs, PCBs, SUVs, UV Light.
A giant pimple on your face, you have a date tonight.

Choking on a biscotti.
Being whacked by John Gotti.
Getting trapped over night in a full port-o-potty.

And I have one final fear to drop in your bucket
About a friend of a friend of a friend of the man from Nantucket:

There once was a man from Eau Claire
Who no one was able to scare.
He wouldn’t join panics
About the Hispanics
And later he was killed by a bear.

True story.

-----

Exactly how to divide up the lines and stanzas is subject to some question, the poem is built on a rhyming couplet base, but it isn't afraid to deviate from it.  A very clear example is that it ends with a limerick (AABBA) followed by a single, short, stand alone line that is rhymed with nothing.

The line, "Look around at these people. How safe do you feel?" is rhymed with nothing instead serving as an introduction to the next two couplets.

Some people make "And can you be sure that you won’t get Ebola from a tainted diet cola," into two lines:
And can you be sure...
That you won't get Ebola from a tainted diet cola

which would make "And can you be sure..." an unrhymed line that, like "Look around at these people. How safe do you feel?" serves as an introduction to the following string of couplets.

Two couplets with three rhymed words (Ebola cola / Ayatollah // hail mail / tail) set the stage for the three line rhyming group that follows (house / blouse / spouse) but it opens the question of whether the three rhyme couplets were really intended to be couplets and whether the three line rhyme groups were really intended to be three lines.

If the world did end today

The wind is strong
The rain is hard
Strange noises come
from outside my home
Perhaps the world will end tonight
the weather's right
And if it did, I'd leave
so much undone
so much unwritten
but at least
I wouldn't have to face
tomorrow
I took four classes this semester
and failed them all by any measure
If by tonight
I cannot write
several responses to
things I've yet to read
Then another failure
becomes official
unless the first
hasn't yet.
And of the other two
who knows?
I know one failure is deffered
but
can I make it into a success
before that extra time runs
out?
And of the other I haven't heard
Haven't heard for good or ill
which makes the prospect
seem worse still.
I hate uncertainty
it seems
more than certain shattered dreams.
And can I solve things by tonight?
Can I really read and write
what must be done
'fore time runs
down?
All hope seemed lost
long ago
and nothing new
has changed since then
in any way, but wrong.

The wind is strong
The rain is hard
Strange noises come
from the space
beyond my walls
Perhaps the world will end
tonight.
The weather's right.
